The Future of Work is Flexibility

If you take a look around, you’ll notice that work is becoming on-demand and flexible.

Uber is probably the best example. There tens of thousands of Uber drivers around the world who work when they need, or when they want, where they are, or where they want to be! All it takes is turning the mobile app on and they are ready to go and pick up some clients.

There are dozens, if not hundreds of other companies that employ a similar model of on-demand workers. Examples include PostMates, Instacart, Checkr, TaskRabbit and so on.

Even traditional brick-and-mortar businesses are becoming more flexible. Workfast, for instance, is a platform that allow businesses to hire flexible workers on demand. The business owner or manager posts a job, candidates reply pretty much instantly, and the best ones are selected.

The benefits of using such a platform over traditional methods are many. First of all the company estimates that the total cost to employers is 40% less when comparred to work agencies. Second, the turnaround time is much shorter. Third, there are reviews and other information available about the candidates and about the businesses, so the whole process becomes more efficient and more transparent, for both sides.

Many companies are also starting to promote home office for a large percent of their employees, and for as many as four days a week. In other words, many employees just need to show up once a week for important meetings.

Other companies are completely going office-less. Automattic, the creators of the famous WordPress publishing software, use a remote-work culture. They have around 500 employees, and virtually all of them work from home, scattered all around the world!

People are starting to realize that they can control how they work, and that this can have a huge impact on the quality of their lives.

What about you? What else do you think work is going to change in the future?
