Are you lagging behind your competitors when it comes to your search rank with Google? Search algorithms are constantly evolving, and keeping up with them can be difficult. In fact, search engine optimization can pose a challenge for any company, necessitating knowledge of keywords, tags, content creation, and backlinks.

One of the best things you can do to boost your search ranking is to build backlinks to your site. In this article, we will explore how to shortcut the process by stealing backlinks from your competitors.

Why Backlinks Matter

Backlinks are one of the key metrics that Google and other search engines use to rank web pages. Google's search algorithms are proprietary, but they do make certain information available to the public. One of the things that has a big impact on a site's search rank is its authority – a measurement of how much value the page contains. When a reputable website links back to your page, it works like an endorsement. Google assumes your page has credibility when you have high-quality backlinks.

According to SEO authority Moz, the best kinds of links are those that happen organically. Editorial links – the kind that happen when an authority website or publication discovers your content and links back to it without being asked – carry a lot of weight with Google. However, links that you ask for can be almost as effective if you handle them in the right way.

Method #1: Analyzing Your Competitors' Backlinks

A good way to build up quality backlinks in a hurry is to steal them from your competitors. That might sound nefarious, but it's actually not. The word "stealing" does not refer to any wrongdoing. Rather, it is a description of a way to find opportunities for backlinks by analyzing what your competitors are doing and capitalizing on the data you find.

The first step to analyzing backlinks is to do a simple Google search for an important keyword. For the purposes of this exercise, you should start by writing down the URLs of the top ten websites that appear in response to your search.

Analyzing backlinks is relatively easy. One of the best free tools available is Mondovo. It allows you to plug in the URL of your competitor and view their top backlinks, anchor texts and broken links. It also gives you the option to filter by countries, IPs, C-class Ips etc.
Once you have a list of sites, you can check them out manually and consider asking those sites for a link. It can be helpful to visit the site and see what kinds of things they are linking to so you can suggest a page of your own.

Method #2: Evaluating Broken Links

One alternative is to take your analysis of the backlinks to the next level, and look for broken links. You can accomplish that by using the same backlink report that you generated previously. Just select all the displayed URLs and at the bottom of the screen, there’s a green button titled ‘Check Link Status’. Click on that and wait for the report to get generated.

Once the report is generated, go to the same backlinks tab and click on ‘Filters’. Then under ‘Filter By’, enter ‘Link Status’ under Select the Field, ‘=’ (without quotes) under Type of Search and ‘Not Found’ under Criteria and then click on ‘Add Criteria’. Lastly, click on ‘Filter’.

Upon clicking on Filter, you will see the list of pages that have broken links.

Broken links to your competitors' sites represent a golden opportunity for you. Once you have a list of broken links, you need to figure out what content used to be on those pages so you can replace it with new content of your own. To do that, you need to use a tool like the WayBack Machine – a website that stores archives of web pages.

Links can break for many different reasons. If a competitor changed their URL or moved their content, the link might be broken. They might also have removed the content, thus rendering the link unusable. Whatever the reason, the broken link is something you can use to your advantage.

For each broken link, follow these steps:

1. Look up the link in the Wayback Machine and read the content.

2. Decide whether the content is relevant to your website. Not every article you find is going to be something that you would want to have on your website. Remember, SEO is not just about keywords anymore. The quality of your content has a huge impact in your Google rank, so don't take this step lightly.

3. If the content is relevant, decide whether it is something you can improve upon. It's not enough simply to rewrite your competitor's content. Your goal should always be to improve upon the original content. That means adding something new and unique. Examples might include:
a. Updating outdated content
b. Adding your unique perspective
c. Approaching the topic from a new angle

4. If the content is both relevant and something you feel you can make better, then go ahead and rewrite it and put it up on your website. It is very important to do this step first, before you reach out to the site that linked to your competitor's page.

5. Email the webmaster of the page with the broken link and propose your new material as a replacement for the broken link. Include a link to your new content – this is why you need to write the new content first – and politely request a link to your page.

6. You may sometimes find that more than one backlink leads to your competitors' defunct page. If that is the case, then it's a good idea to email all of the sites with a request for a backlink. You can expect to get a decent success rate with this tactic, probably between 10% and 20%.

Method #3: Google Alerts

The third method you can use to replicate backlinks is to use Google Alerts to monitor mentions of your competitors online.

To set up an alert, go to Google Alerts. At the top of the page, you will see a search box. You can enter anything you want, including:

-The name of your competitor
-A chosen keyword
-A product name

Whichever option you choose, Google will sweep the internet and send you an email whenever the search term you have entered is mentioned. You can then visit the site where the mention was posted and determine whether it poses an opportunity for you to obtain a new backlink.

Not every backlink needs to be to an article or a piece of content. Using these methods may also help you find opportunities to be listed in industry directories and publications. Any link from an authoritative website in your industry can help improve your search rank.

As the idiom goes, a picture is worth a thousand words! If you are not currently using images on your site or blog, you are missing out. Apart from enriching your content and making your site more visually appealing to visitors, images can actually boost your search traffic, many people go on Google looking for images, and Google redirects that traffic to the respective websites that published the images.

With such benefits in play, why many bloggers and webmasters simply don’t bother using images? Probably because they don’t have an easy and affordable way to get the images themselves.

Simply going to Google, searching for an image and using it on your site doesn’t work. Those images have copyright, meaning that you could get introuble if you use them without permission from the copyright owner.

The best solution is to find royalty-free images, because you can use those without having to worry about legal issues. There are many royalty-free image sites around, but one that I used in the past and recommend is called Dreamstime.

I discovered them by chance when I was looking for an image that contained Brazilian Reais (the Brazilian currency). I couldn’t find it on rival sites, but managed to do it on Dreamstime, so I became a client after that.

In fact they have close to 40 million royalty-free images on their database. Some are available free of charge as you can see here. Others are available for purchase, starting at $0.2 per download, which is quite affordable if you compare with the competition.

If you are a WordPress user, life is going to be even easier. You can install the Dreamstime plugin and add images to your posts directly from the WordPress dashboard.

With videos, you have just as many options as with written content.

However:

One option is to hire a bunch of people to work for you. The best part about this is that you can make them call you "Boss" or "Your Majesty".

The worst part is, it can get expensive to hire people.

This is where plugins come in handy. The best WordPress plugins out there will make change your life FOREVER!

A plugin is software that can plug in (AHA…see what they did there?) to an existing computer program and do a job that the existing program doesn't already do.

Plugins are awesome tools that can save you massive time and money, and probably more than a few headaches.

Keep in mind, though, that too many cooks in the kitchen will make your blog miserable. AN overabundance of plugins will slow your site down and make the user experience pretty frustrating.

Stick to ten plugins, absolutely maximum, and you'll be good to go.

"But hang on," (you may be thinking), "There are literally hundreds of plugins out there. I know this…I just Googled it. How do I know which ones are worth using?!"

Excellent question, and one I am more than happy to help you with! I've played around with a ton of different WordPress plugins, and I've narrowed my list of must-haves down to four.

These are my four top WordPress plugins and are great at what they do. They will save you time, money, and stress and make your whole job easier.

Best WordPress Plugins #1: Yoast SEO

Helps with: SEO optimization
Price: Free for the basic version (premium starts at $69/year)

Yoast SEO is one of the most well-known SEO plugins out there, and with good reason (this is my favorite on the list of the best WordPress plugins). It's awesome. Yoast is a great tool for automating all that technical white hat SEO things so you don't have to worry about it. Talk about a load off your plate.

When you download the plugin, it will show up on the existing sidebar of your WordPress navigation page as "SEO".

The free version (which is really all you need right now) comes with some awesome features, like these:

  • Post titles and meta descriptions: This feature lets you set a template for for your titles and meta description on search engines.
  • Ordinarily, you wouldn't have any control over how the title appears in search engines. With Yoast you do, which will help with your click-through rate.
  • Sitemap: Sitemaps are a super important element of good SEO. Sitemaps help search engines index your site. You can enable the sitemap with the swift click of a button, and grab the link in a jiffy. Awesome.
  • There are a ton of other built-in tools in the Yoast plugin, which you can read about on the plugin page.

Best WordPress Plugins #2: Akismet

Helps with: Spam protection
Price: Name your own price (which can be free)

Nobody, least of all you, has time for stupid spammy comments on your posts. No, thank you. Akismet is the ultimate in spam protection for your blog. It automatically catches spam and makes it disappear before you even see it.

Awesome.

There are a few different plans to choose from, but my favorite (and the one that will do just fine for your blog) is the basic plan, which allows you to set your own monthly price. You can download it for free, but why not donate a dollar or two to help them out? After the basic plan, the premium plans start at $5, and go up to $50.

Best WordPress Plugins #3: SumoMe

Helps with: Growing your site's traffic
Price: Free (for the basic version)

SumoMe is one of my all time favorite plugins. Mostly because they have really amusing marketing emails. But also because the plugin is awesome.

Once you install the plugin, you can download apps like the List Builder (lets your create a fancy lightbox pop-up to capture email addresses), Scroll Box (an email collection box that pops up whenever you tell it to), Heat Maps (helps you see where people are clicking on your site), and Smart Bar (among plenty others).

Personally, I love the Scroll Box app. It's a polite way to ask for a reader's email address once they've popped around your site for a bit. You can choose at what point on the page you want the box to appear, how often you want it to pop up, and what you want it to say.

The only downside to the free version is that it is plastered with the SumoMe logo. The only way to get rid of that is to upgrade to the Starter version (which is $10/mo, or you can get the Pro version for $100/mo). I don't think it's a deal breaker, but it is something you'll have to deal with if you use the plugin.

Best WordPress Plugins #4: CoSchedule

Helps with: Content marketing and social media
Price: $15/mo

CoSchedule connects your WordPress blog to your social media sites with a freaking cool drag-and-drop editorial calendar that makes scheduling your posts (across all your platforms) a breeze.

CoSchedule allows you to plan ahead and publish your awesome content, consistently. It gets rid of the headache of remembering when to publish, and also remembering to update all your social media platforms.

Never again will you have to spend hours posting the same information to Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and your blog.

Literally so annoying.

You can easily move blog posts around and plan/edit your posting schedule. Then it automatically adjusts the rest of your social media to those changes. Freaking legit.

How many blog posts have you read on link building over the past 12 months? I've read hundreds myself, written a couple and bookmarked a few for safekeeping. Today I have produced a list of my favourite 10 link building articles from 2015 that I recommend you read:

1. Why Link Building Matters

All the way back in February Andrea Lehr published a collaborative effort between BuzzStream and Fractl that reviewed the trends in outbound and inbound marketing techniques.

The conclusion: link building should still be an essential strategy in your digital efforts.

2. 11 Link Building Techniques

In March, Shane Barker published an article on 11 link building techniques that are currently working to improve your website in Google and increase traffic to your website.

This article published on SEMRush features broken link building, Brian Dean's Skyscraper technique and turning mentions into backlinks among other strategies that are working for Shane and others this year, and likely to continue into 2016.

3. We’re Ignoring Google & It’s Working – Here’s Why

Back in May, Samuel Jefferies posted a bold blog on Inbound.org detailing the success he was having in the face of Google's scaremongering tactics.

Can I sneak this one into a roundup of Link Building blog posts? Well blogger outreach is a big part of link building so I think this post from over the summer by Irma Hunkeler on Blue Grass is well worth the inclusion.

A link building roundup post wouldn't be complete without something from Neil Patel. This piece from August was one of my favourites from 2015 in which Neil explains on his blog, Quicksprout which content attracts the most backlinks.

Fortunately for me, he pointed out that people continue to love list posts, infographics and making an influencer look amazing.

8. Google’s Manual Actions Guide (& How To Fix Them)

Google penalties have been one of the big talking points over the past 12 months and further back. Some websites are still being hit by them and others have either been unsure or slow in recovering from them.

Shane Barker published a great guide on Search Engine People back in August detailing how to revoke and simply prevent your site from becoming the latest victim. This 11-point list includes unnatural links, spam, and thin content.

9. 5 Ways Successful SEOs Are Killing It With Topical Trust Flow

Topical Trust Flow is one of my favourite metrics for determining the quality of a link. If you're building links on blogs solely for the purpose of ranking in Google, you can ignore this Majestic trust factor at your peril.

Jacob Hagberg wrote this awesome post in August where he gave five examples of SEOs who were doing an excellent job thanks to Trust Flow. This includes finding Twitter profiles of industry influencers and being able to spot the fakes, being able to check that your content marketing strategy is reaching and resonating with the right audience, and helping your website to become an authority in your niche.

10. How Much Do Keywords Still Matter?

Alp Mimaroglu's blog post on Kissmetrics discussed the topic of keyword heavy anchor text links. A few years ago it used to be all about obtaining these type of links to drive traffic to your website from Google but the game has changed now.
The blog post goes on to talk about authoritative links, keyword placement and longtail keywords.

One key feature of great videos that end up going viral is that they are accessible to a large, world-wide audience. How to Sell Your Product In the Thousands

If you stop to observe people who create products majority of their success trajectories share a similar symptomatic curve. A first product launch, most of the time, ends up to become an utter failure and disappointment.

Niche research, skills, extraordinary craftsmanship in the creation phase… Somehow, all of these fail to fight frustration, which seems inevitable after rearranging the dots to no success.

And after losing our wits struggling with a similar story arc for the launch of our first product, my partner and I decided to dig deeper into what makes a successful product launch.

The article ahead is a very actionable list of methods we used in order to generate leads for our upcoming fitness program. Whereas our first product was completed almost a year ago and had dozens of sales initially, this one, which is still in production, has already a strong list of leads stretching into the thousands.

What we did falls into the intermediate area of marketing tactics, and is something that you can successfully copy and paste.

Abandon the "build it and they will come mentality"

The average online entrepreneur is an optimistic fella. But coupled with ignorance on how a product launch should go, this is a dangerous starting point.

Most of the time, when a first product launch goes to waste, two things tend to happen- a lot of time, energy and money are being thrown away; and there comes this crippling fear of doing it again.

We've been in the same position. Not fun.

However, as much as I'd like to point to luck, circumstances and raise my shoulders, it's easy to realize that the "build it and they will come" mentality is what ruins the show.

Tim Ferriss, the New York Times bestselling author once confessed that this most popular book collected dust for a whole year before he approached with the right marketing. During this year, the book that is now worth millions was worth less than pennies.

And that is how you should look at your product as well. Without the right amplification methods, you can create the cure for cancer, place it on the nicest of web pages, and still be surprised how quiet things can become after the launch.

Know this- though any product can be sold into the thousands, not a single one can be sold without proper marketing.

So let's start…

Refine your online identity

Selling a fitness product is next to impossible if your online profile speaks internet marketing. For that purpose I'm already shooting pictures where I stand around with dumbbells sprayed with lotion.

But it gets more elaborate than this.

Selling a product is much easier when you have a stronger and clearly defined online identity. People connect easier, and they tend to trust you more judging by association. It simply makes sense for them.

But aside from putting pictures that fall in line with your product (look at Pat Flynn with his microphone pic for the podcast), you should rearrange your about page or change the intro on your YouTube channel.

Even tweaking your social profiles (including who you follow and what you post) makes a huge difference.

Finally, try to slightly shift your content creation efforts, creating something that once again falls in line with your upcoming product.

The mail list

You might be skeptical about the role of e-mail when it comes to selling a product in numbers far beyond count. But it outranks other methods nine ways to Sunday.

However though, there is a delicate way to execute it.
We prefer creating two separate lists. And here is why.

The remind list

The purpose of the remind list is to remind people when your product is ready to sell. This increases conversions. But there is a small tweak attached, which helped us to quickly grow the list into the thousands.

The giveaway opt-in

If you have a number of articles where traffic circulates daily, or a bunch of YouTube videos for that matter, you should only place an opt-in box saying:

We are creating X, which is cool because of Y. Leave your e-mail address and you may get it for free or at least 50% off once it comes out.

This alone generated 2000 e-mail subscribers which are basically interested and highly reliable leads.

Once the workout program comes out, we simply send the e-mail to those that won a free access, and the pitch e-mail to those that won a 50% discount.

Basically, this is the same method as the one above, but can prove to be far more effective since the pop-up interrupts attention and forces interaction.

Use words like discount, FREE (with capital letters), and a bargain… Also, frame the wording so that it doesn't create any attachments at all.

Instead of "You will hear from us", use something like "We will send one e-mail letting you know".

The best thing with pop-ups and opt-in forms though- you can A/B test them and refine every aspect of the text, design or placement.

Using someone else's product to generate leads

By and large, this is my favorite tactic for generating leads. And the core of it is easy to replicate.

Simply find a product that is even vaguely familiar to your own, and write a review about it, or film a YouTube video.

Managing to rank high with it, you will bring in decent traffic. Then, simply include the opt-in box, or the pop-up described above, and you end up with a stream of free leads.

To illustrate this, here is how we took a popular fitness product from Beachbody, and used it to generate leads. The extensive Cize review that we created for Lifestyle Updated is a perfect example.

The teaching list

Contrary to the "remind list", this one requires more effort. But the payoff is substantially larger as well.

For the purpose of this list you will create an automated sequence of e-mails that teaches the visitor something for free. Ideally, these free bits should be minimal aspects of your paid program.

If you are selling a course about finding a job, the e-mail sequence can include tips on structuring your CV.

The importance of this list is twofold…

First, you refine leads over time- people unsubscribe, and what is left is a more interested and more targeted audience.

Second, and slightly more important- those who end up interacting with your e-mails, are far more likely to buy once the product sales pitch arrives.

The squeeze page

Like I said though, albeit the creative constraints of this tactic are loose, putting it in place requires effort.

Whereas getting e-mail addresses for the previous one was an easy task, here it gets substantially harder.

Having a squeeze page rectifies that.

The squeeze page has the sole purpose of collecting e-mails. It too, can become the subject of A/B testing. Here is one that we made for our first product.

As you can notice, in exchange for the e-mail address, there has to be something of value being offered. And you can get creative here- a pdf checklist, an e-book, a video series, VIP content, or even a demo of your product.

The real problem here though, is traffic. Initially you will want to experiment with Facebook ads, but it can cost quite a bit if you don't really know your target demographic. For that purpose, Bing ads are far cheaper, and they will help you refine your ad copy and ad structure.

Then, once a person gets on board, the automation process starts by sending the first e-mail. But something else needs to take place even before that.

The thank you page hidden feature

This is a simple page to which the visitor is redirected once he leaves his e-mail address. The design is simple (you might want to include your pic so people start to build the relationship right away), and it basically allows you to say "thanks for getting in".

It is also wise to prepare the visitor for what is about to come.

Example- "you will receive an e-mail with your (goodies) few minutes from now, and another one every Monday".

That way the subscriber is more likely to interact with your e-mails once you send them.

However, the most neglected feature of the thank you page is the share option. And here is how to use it in order to triple or quadruple your subscriber base.

Somewhere on the thank you page you will make sure to place two or three share buttons. Asking your new subscribers to spread the word by clicking. In exchange, throw in some bonuses. For example- if we stick to the "get yourself hired" course, and say we offered a free "structure your CV checklist", this bonus gift could be something in the lines of "a printable checklist", or a template of some sort.

To wrap this up, these methods though seemingly easy require their fair share of work. The alternative though, is building your product with care and passion, only to wait for sales until the cows come home. Remember, any product can sell in the thousands, but not without proper marketing. The methods described above go a long way in making your product be seen by thousands of people.

Is WordPress the Safest Blogging Platform?

Whenever I need to learn more about how to improve my own blogs, Daily Blog Tips is where I turn. The website constantly turns me to new tools and ideas that I can utilize immediately and effectively, thanks to the quality of the posts. If you are reading this blog, then you are more than likely using WordPress. That is to say nothing about this blog or its audience so much as to say that WordPress dominates the market to such an extent that most people aren't even aware of other blogging platforms, except perhaps Blogger and Tumblr.

Yet is WordPress safe? Every year hundreds of thousands of websites are compromised or shut down by malicious users, and that says a lot about the state of internet security in today's day and age. How safe can one be with another blogging platform while still creating something people will see?

A lot of that depends on you. WordPress is most certainly the most customizable mainstream blogging platform. You are free to make a lot of changes, but you are also free to make mistakes. There are some things you should know about regarding general blog protection and WordPress safety.

Are Other Platforms Any Better?

To answer the question briefly, not particularly. WordPress has more than three quarters of the market and with a little searching and work can obtain all of the safety feature more expensive platforms have. Some would find it worth it to pay for the services of Squarespace or Svbtle, but extra features do not mean extra security. In fact, there isn't really any well-known blogging platform that beats an upgraded WordPress in terms of security.

That doesn't mean WordPress is safe. What it means is that you need to do your research. There may be exceptions to this rule, and relative security does not mean actual security. Other platforms, such as Tumblr, that are more protected against some types of attacks are so restrictive that one could argue they aren't usable blogging platforms at all. If you're using WordPress already, you might as well stick with it.

Virtual Private Networks

No matter what blog platform you are using, you are vulnerable while you are using a public network unprotected. Your blog will be tied to an account online and likely an email address to go along with it. Both of these accounts (and any other online account that you use online) are at risk because the login information can be intercepted by an amateur malicious user with a sniffer program on a public network. Once a cybercriminal has that information, no good password or security program can stop them.

The only way to protect yourself on a public network is to use a Virtual Private Network (VPN), which is a service that will connect your device to an offsite secure server using an encrypted connection. This connection keeps cybercriminals (and anyone else) out, allowing you to blog privately from any network you want. You will also be able to access any research materials and websites you want as your IP address will be masked, getting around regional restrictions.

The main thing to concern yourself with is getting the right VPN for the job. You need to look for speed, a large number of servers and strong security measures (like military-grade encryption). It's recommended you read some reviews to find the best VPN for any blogging platform.

Plugin Usage

A lot of what makes WordPress great all-around is the plugin support it offers. Enterprising individuals and businesses have developed a vast array of plugins for WordPress websites ranging from security tools to eCommerce solutions to small widgets. If it can be programmed, it is probably out there, and some website is using it.

This isn't necessarily a good thing, and you need to pay attention. Every plugin you install fundamentally changes the functionality of your website or blog. Combined with the popularity of WordPress, this leads to a few things:

-Malicious users develop plugins that are malware in disguise, sometimes with a timed release so that you don't immediately become suspicious.

-Cybercriminals develop plugins that work and are fine, but also contain a backdoor that allows them access into more sensitive information. Alternatively the plugin might collect information (on you or your readers) secretly and send it back to the creator.

-Established and popular plugins are neglected, and malicious users find security holes to exploit to get into your blog.

There are absolutely safe plugins that you should use, but you need to put safety first. If a plugin isn't updating itself, then you should probably replace it. If you don't hear much about a plugin, wait a while and let other people try first. Read reviews and ask people questions. The internet is scary, but it just as often is happy to help. If you use plugins, WordPress is less safe than other platforms unless you are careful.

Proper Management

In what you may see as a trend from the previous two sections, you need to know that this makes proper management of your blog a vital thing for you to keep up with. Regular chores might not be as fun as creating content, but WordPress isn't automatic. It won't be safe unless you are regularly doing these things (some directly blog related, some not):

-You need to equip your computer with the latest security suite. The free anti-virus that came with your computer just isn't enough when you have more than a few of your own files on the line. If your computer is breached, then your blog can easily be compromised through it.

-You need to take some time every month to do a manual review of all blog related files and systems. This includes going through your blog's pages to see if there is anything out of place and scouring through your computer to make sure no one (or thing) is tampering with it.

-You need to be involved with your blog's community. Not only will you gain valuable information about how to improve your blog or website, but you will get a heads up if there is a potential security issue with your blog.

-You need to ask yourself if you can keep up with these habits regularly, as they make up a great part of how WordPress can be the safest blogging platform. You should note that with any blog you may have to deal with maintenance, unless you are willing to spend a lot of money.

Conclusion

WordPress is a changing platform and malicious users are always finding new ways to make life difficult for you. WordPress cannot respond immediately to every threat that comes its way and may take several days to respond to a particularly nasty threat. This results in a tumultuous safety landscape.

Nonetheless, we still believe that WordPress can be made into the safest platform through its adaptability and common acceptance. Other platforms are usually too restrictive to be usable or so open that they are indefensible, making WordPress the default choice, especially given the other advantages it provides for your website.
