You already know how important it is to title your posts well …

… but are your titles as effective as they could be?

The title (or headline) is often all that a reader sees before deciding whether or not to read the rest of your post.

Perhaps they see it on Twitter, in their RSS reader, in their inbox, or even in a list within the categories or archives of your blog.

One of the best tools I've come across for writing titles is Jon Morrow's Headline Hacks.

This .pdf guide contains 52 different title templates split into a bunch of different categories. While not all templates will work for all types and styles of blog, you're sure to find a few you can easily use or tweak.

Jon doesn't just give the templates, though; he also gives examples (some real-world, some made up) of headlines that use them.

The one tweak I'd love is to have more real-life examples: for me, some of the invented ones felt a little bit forced.

It's a completely free guide, so do get your hands on a copy today if you don't already have it. You'll need to sign up to Jon's email newsletter, but he doesn't email often, and when he does, he's always worth listening to.

Are you already using Headline Hacks, or do you know another great in-depth guide on creating titles? Drop a comment below to tell us.
